A gathering of artists, united by a love of creativity and the remarkable beauty of the Sutherland Shire.
More than a club. A community.
The Sutherland Shire Art Society is a welcoming and supportive community of artists based in the Sutherland Shire of New South Wales. We bring together painters, sketchers, and visual artists of all skill levels, from absolute beginners picking up a brush for the first time to accomplished exhibiting artists.
Our members share a passion for the visual arts and for the extraordinary natural beauty that surrounds us here in the Shire, from the coastal cliffs of Cronulla to the bush landscapes of the Royal National Park.
We meet regularly to paint together, share techniques, attend demonstrations, and support each other's artistic journeys. We also hold an annual exhibition and participate in the wider arts community of Sydney's south.
A history of art in the Shire.
The Sutherland Shire Art Society is the oldest art society in the area, with a history stretching back more than five decades.
Founded
The Society was inaugurated on 18 January 1970 at the home of Ethel Jagelman, attended by eleven founding members, all local artists. From that first gathering, something enduring was set in motion.
A presence in the community
In its early years, the Society became a visible part of the Shire's cultural life. Members were invited to participate in significant events, including a Visual Arts Exhibition linked to the official opening of the Sydney Opera House, and State Government initiatives such as "Art in the Park" and "Art in the Camellia Gardens."
Sutherland Civic Centre opening
The Society was part of the month-long celebrations marking the official opening of the Sutherland Civic Centre, now known as the Sutherland Entertainment Centre, a landmark moment for arts and culture in the Shire.
Shop 26, Miranda Marketplace
The Society negotiated use of Shop 26 at Miranda Marketplace to operate a dedicated art gallery for the exhibition and sale of members' work. Voluntarily staffed by members, the gallery welcomed guest artists who attended monthly meetings to demonstrate their skills and offer appraisements.
Bicentennial celebrations
The Society played an active role in Australia's Bicentennial celebrations, continuing its long tradition of contributing to major civic and cultural events in the region.
Jannali, Southgate, and Menai
After leaving Shop 26, meetings and painting sessions moved to Jannali Community Hall, where they continued for many years. The Society also held regular exhibitions at Southgate Shopping Centre, and in more recent years has been welcomed by Menai Marketplace, where exhibitions continue to be well attended.
A new home in Loftus
On 7 February 2018, the Society relocated to Loftus Community Hall, 119 Loftus Avenue, Loftus. With ample parking and a welcoming space, it has been the Society's home ever since.
Still growing
The Society brings together professional and non-professional artists, alongside those who simply love art and the company of creative people. From eleven founding members in a living room in 1970, the Sutherland Shire Art Society has grown into a thriving community with weekly events spanning many aspects of the visual arts.
